Duplicate cleanup is only safe when the tool proves files are identical and leaves a keeper copy. Filename matching is not enough. Two files can share a name and have different contents.

Use size and hashes, not names

MacTidy groups files by size and confirms duplicates with SHA-256 hashing. That means the duplicate list is based on file contents, not just similar names. One copy of each duplicate set is kept out of the selected removal list by default.

Start in human folders

Downloads, Desktop, Documents, Music, Movies, Pictures and shared folders are safer targets than system directories. The duplicate that matters is usually a repeated export, a copied installer, a duplicate photo or a file downloaded twice.

Preview before removing

Exact duplicates can still have different meaning. A file inside a project folder may be part of an archive, while the same file in Downloads may be disposable. Use Finder preview or reveal the path before deleting anything from an organized folder.

Separate duplicates from similar photos
