A storage analyzer should answer one question quickly: what is actually using the drive? The answer is often less dramatic than a cleaner ad suggests and more useful than a single disk-full warning.
Read categories first
MacTidy measures Applications, Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Movies, Music, Developer, App data and Caches, then estimates System and other from the remaining used space. That gives you a first-pass view without scanning every hidden file in isolation.
Drill into big folders
Category labels are only a start. A storage analyzer earns its keep when you can open a large folder, see immediate children by size, and keep drilling until the oversized item is obvious. MacTidy caches those measurements during the session so moving around the map stays responsive.
Do not chase System blindly
System and other can include snapshots, app data, local cloud copies and files macOS manages. A cleaner cannot safely delete all of it. The practical approach is to inspect personal categories and known cleanup locations first, then let macOS manage the rest when possible.
Turn findings into reviewable actions
A map is not a delete button. Use it to find candidates, then use cleanup, uninstall, duplicate search or developer cleanup to remove items with a proper review list.
